Operational Risk Management

Primary Integration Solutions offers a comprehensive program to help owners, operators and managers of mission critical facilities achieve long-term reliability, systems availability and energy efficiency.  The Data Center Operational Risk Management (ORM) program is intended to ensure long-term uptime of data center facilities. It applies "Industry Best Practices" based on a culmination of several of the data center industries most rigorous end users and experts including the Uptime Institute's new operational sustainability standard.  This allows clients to optimize the performance of their sites and minimize the human error risks intrinsic to operations and maintenance of mission critical facilities.

With this program, PI will evaluate the operations, maintenance, testing and training required to sustain the data center mission as well as its specific service level agreements (SLAs) and implement corrective actions to achieve optimum results.  It will create prioritized processes and programs that manage the risks associated with data center operators doing their job within critical facilities, where unscheduled down time cannot be tolerated.

The first step is typically performing a site reliability assessment.  Broken down into four primary components – Operations, Maintenance, Testing and Energy – the Data Center Operations Consulting program encompasses a series of specific analytical and proactive elements:

  • Operations

A comprehensive audit of current data center staffing, standards and protocols, and performance metrics; adequacy of Standard Operating Procedures (normal, emergency, and maintenance modes), process and procedure documentation, including critical infrastructure, monitoring and controls and safety/security operations and protocols; and standards development, including emergency operations, disaster recovery and response, and escalation policies.  Other program elements address data center staff training, evaluation and certification; SLA and key performance indicator assessment; and organizational structure, record keeping and document control evaluation; and risk management/reliability assurance, including single point of failure analysis, design/peer review, forensic investigations and business continuity/disaster recovery planning.

  • Maintenance

An initial analysis of all maintenance requirements for critical data center electrical, mechanical, plumbing and control systems, including safety best practices, compliance with manufacturer’s recommendations, spare parts inventory and storage, equipment history, warranty records and commissioning reports; development of complete maintenance procedures, including infrastructure refresh standards, training, vendor management, and optimized use of CMMS programs to include preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, and reliability centered maintenance strategies.

  • Testing

Dynamic testing of data center infrastructure systems on a periodic basis insures that specified system performances are achieved over the life of the facility. A program level approach to recurring performance testing is a fundamental aspect of a continuous-commissioning program and should be coordinated into a comprehensive maintenance program. Dynamic testing should be required following all equipment and system modifications, repairs, and major maintenance activities to validate that the restored systems perform to specification. Inherent to these testing protocols are load testing, exercising all sequences-of-operations, and sub-system testing such as fuel oil testing, Cooling Tower water testing, etc.

  • Energy

Data center energy commissioning focusing on benchmarking power utilization effectiveness (PUE), identifying energy conservation opportunities, and optimizing infrastructure performance through re-commissioning of monitoring and controls systems, central plant “tune-ups” and computer room airflow management practices; critical system load management programs that measure, track, and report actual load vs available capacity for power and cooling to support IT planning and deployment; computational fluid dynamics modeling (where justified) to validate failure scenarios; energy management program development with plant optimization; evaluation of renewable energy opportunities; development of energy usage tracking metrics; and energy commissioning program implementation, to ensure long-term efficiencies.

  • Data Analytics

We apply data analytics by examining the real-time monitored data from BMS/EPMS, Security, Network Management and local devices with the purpose of making intelligent decisions that support “Smart Maintenance”, save energy and reduce risk of outages by increasing reliability. By identifying undiscovered patterns and hidden relationships our analysis focuses on the process of deriving sound conclusions that create opportunities to achieve better outcomes. Through Data analytics we allow companies and organizations to make better business decisions about establishing more efficient operations without impacting reliability.

  • Real Time Data and Document Management

We support clients with on line tools and software which simplify collection and analysis of operational data to support informed management of operational risk.

  • Training / e-Learning Programs

We have created a hybrid teaching delivery approach which is a combination of web based self-study and in the field (hands on) training. Our Web-based training (called e-learning) is anywhere, any-time instruction delivered over the Internet or a corporate intranet to browser-equipped students. We provide two primary models of Web-based instruction: asynchronous (self-directed, self-paced) and synchronous (instructor-facilitated). Areas covered include both hard technical skills (Systems and devices, Theory of Operations, Operations and Maintenance etc.) and soft skills (Communications, Critical Thinking, Planning). Our in-field training facility contains: UPS Systems, Switchgear, Automatic Transfer Switches, Static Switches, PDU’s RPP’s, DX Air Conditioning, Chilled Water Air Conditioning, Site Monitoring.
We also offer customized training programs for end user operators that want additional training on their site specific system architecture, MEP systems, processes and procedures.
